Assessment
Children are assessed in many ways over the course of their school career. Some is done very informally and children would not even necessarily realise that they are being assessed. On other occasions, assessment may be more formal; spelling tests, SATS etc.
At parent consultations, teachers should issue individual assessments in these areas. The information below can also help parents to see what their child has been or will be studying as the year progresses.
Statements for each year group can be found within the National Curriculum or Early Years Curriculum - links below.
Statutory Framework - Early Years
Statutory Assessments
Year 1 phonics screening check
The check will take place in June when your child will read 40 words out loud to a teacher. You’ll find out how your child did, and their teacher will assess whether he or she needs extra help with reading. Children have a chance to take the check again in Year if they have not met age related expectations in Year 1.
Key Stage 2
Your child will take national tests in May when they reach the end of key stage 2. These test your child’s skills in:
- English reading
- English grammar, punctuation and spelling
- Maths
The tests last less than 4 hours. You’ll get the results in July.
The school will send you the results of your child’s tests and teacher assessments.
